charlotte,Lens errors, especially from falls are very common. I have many Canon's, and NEVER use a case for this very reason. It wouldn't make any noises or anything when I turned it on; I just got the lens error. This has to be THE most common failure mode for a digital camera, a stuck lens, jammed lens, or a malfunctioning lens.

After many years of use I took camera out and found lens partially extended and got "lens error" when I turned camera on. It really was an extremly gentle rotation of the lens which didn't feel as though it could possibly have done any damage to the camera. After gently but firmly tapping the A/V out corner of the camera 4 or 5 times it works like a charm again.THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

But after several tries and turning on and off, I got a message that the battery was dead. Some other names for this problem include for Canon Powershot and Nikon Coolpix "lens error", Sony Cybershot "access error", Kodak Easyshare "lens obstructed",and Fuji Finepix "zoom error" and "focus error".
