Thanks again! The problem is common for most cameras with telescopic lens barrel. The logo is showing up dark as much of the battery power is likely going to the lens motor trying to overcome the sand. First, I took out the battery and the memory card. THEN I CHECKED ON HERE TO SEE IF MY STRATEGY WAS ON HERE. Unfortunately, it's difficult to access these components in the elph series cameras (a lot of things in the way).
Based on something I saw on some web forum, I popped the battery in and out several times, after which it mystically returned to normal operations. When you turn the camera on with the card removed it may come back to life, as this triggers a reset in some cameras. The one that seems to work is forcing the lens until it clicks. Then I used the spine of the camera manual and to my surprise the lens actually retracted. Fix #2: If the camera's batteries ran down completely while its lens was still open, the camera may show a lens error or not start properly when new batteries are installed. Your experience may help others.
