They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try. Here is what the lens error (E18 error on Canon) looks like. I could hear the gear didn't go very smooth, little "ticks" could be heard. do not try forcing the lens. After this the lens opening and closing went smooth - without odd noises or ticking. Recommend closely looking at the lens barrel when it's extended.
