In such cases, the lens barrel guide pins have become unseated from their guide slots (see the below illustration). Put a fresh set of batteries back in (preferably rechargeable NiMH 2500mah or better) and turn the camera on. They should fix this for free. Thanks. his comment is here

Camera fixed! Canon Camera Lens Error Will Shutdown Automatically While I did take them out, what worked was prying the lens out by one of the little bosses, the nub, that held the cap-ring in. You have nothing to lose.... (Oh and I took out the little battery and put it back in for the clock, that did nothing). Some people also have actually used a "Shop Vac" with this fix to help extend a retracted lens.
