So yes, I too am a NEW ITEM sufferer...and as much as I really LOVE this little camera I am not sure if I will replace it with the same model Couldnt' get the lens to retract all the way and kept getting lens error and retry power on messages. Camera fixed! jonno,Take a look at this. I don't claim this the correct fix for this problem, but I know I had the error and this simple step corrected the problem. I worked the entire gear by pushing the motor rotor bit by bit with the miniature screw driver. It should com apart without too much trouble. Your objective would be to try to reseat them by straightening the lens. Place it on the back with the lens facing up and take a look at the spacing between the lens and the lens housing. the springs on this model are different than what I saw on the article about the A1000. I guess I tapped hard enough to break something inside, it looks like a small bulb that is also now white... I gently pushed it to the side and it worked like a charm!!! Worked a charm!! So the batteries run out while the lens is extending or retracting. Thank you very much for your suggestion.
I had a powershot do the same thing to me 2 years ago, so I got that out and tried the process out on that one too, but it didn't work But after reading all this, thought "what the heck" and pushed harder, it clicked and went back in!!!! I have many Canon's, and NEVER use a case for this very reason. Each time I tried to power up the camera I got "Lens Error, automatically shutting down - Restart Camera" - and it would turn off.
I tried taking the whole thing apart to clean it but can't work out how to get the front cover off. tried pushing lightly on lens. thanks so much!i did everything.this helped so much :Dyayy! If the easy fixes didn't work, then the camera probably needs replacement of the entire lens assembly, which is no trivial task.
It takes a technician a lot of work to completely disassemble the camera.
